Global warming (also known as global climate change) is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and the oceans ever since the mid-twentieth century, and its projected continuation.

Occurrence[edit source]

There is a scientific consensus that climate change is occurring and that human activities are the primary driver of climate change.

Causes[edit source]

The largest human influence on global warming has been the emission of greenhouse gases.

Effects[edit source]

Glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world and global sea levels are rising.

Public Opinion[edit source]

Americans greatly underestimate the scientific consensus on climate change.

Due to political divisions, there is some debate about how much people would change their opinions about climate change if they were more informed about the science.

Solutions[edit source]

One way to encourage a reduction in emissions is an emissions tax. The IPCC has stated that emission taxes can be both cost-effective and environmentally effective. Nuclear power is also touted as a solution: the Brookings institute claims that nuclear power is the most cost effective low carbon power technology.

The Economist and researchers published in Nature have argued that cutting emissions alone is not enough to avoid dangerous climate change. One suggested strategy to complement reduced emissions is increasing forested areas. Scientists are studying whether increasing forested areas could reduce a significant amount of global warming.
